Hope the winters are treating you well. It is essential to change and update our skin care routine as per the weather since skin reacts differently to different climatic conditions. Today’s post will guide you about skincare in winters.
Winters are a time to opt for gentle and mild cleansers. Harsh cleansers will strip your skin of moisture leading to increased dryness so always opt for mild cleansers this season. Use cleanser not more than twice a day.
Avoid ingredients like salicylic acid/menthol in cleansers for winters. Instead opt for hydrating cleansers with glycerin/honey/AHA and other hydrating agents. Also make sure your cleanser is free from alcohol which is a known drying agent.
SOAPS/SHOWER GELS :
Use an alcohol free glycerin based soap or a moisturizing shower gel for your bath.
AVOID HOT BATHS :
As much as we maybe tempted to take hot baths this actually dries up our skin. Ideal winter baths should be short and taken with lukewarm water.
MILK BATHS :
Milk baths yield amazing results and give you soft skin. Just add some milk to your regular bath water and you will have soft supple skin.
BATH OILS :
Use bath oils during winters for soft skin all day long. You may use commercially available bath oils/aroma oils/almond and olive oil for the same.
HAND WASH AND HAND CREAM :
The skin on our palms is very delicate and liable to cracks during winters hence always used alcohol free hand wash during winters. Also keep your hands soft by using a good hand cream or moisturizing cream and gloves.
SCRUBS AND EXFOLIATION :
Stay away from harsh scrubs during winters. It is best to opt for scrubs with organic ingredients like honey, sugar and olives and make sure you exfoliate gently.
Selecting the right moisturizer is the mainstay of winter skin care. Opt for creams over lotions during the cold weather. Creams being oil based are much more emollient and hydrating than lotions.
You must moisturize your face at least twice a day during winters – once at morning after washing your face and once at bedtime. Dry skin may require more frequent moisturization and they may moisturize three to four times a day.
Look out for ingredients like hyaluronic acid/ceramides/sorbitol/glycerine in your moisturizer.
FACE OILS :
Facial oils are a great way of keeping your face well moisturized specially for dry skin type. However be careful and avoid pore clogging oils like mineral oil. You can opt for almond/vitamin E oil. You may apply face oils twice a day or overnight.
EYE CREAM :
Under eye area is the most prone to dryness specially as you age. Always keep it well moisturized by using a good eye cream twice a day.
BODY BUTTER :
Don’t forget to care for your body while caring for the face. Moisturize all over twice a day. I personally love to use body butters over body lotions since they are much more hydrating and the moisturizing effect lasts longer too!
FOOT CARE :
Scrub your feet regularly to keep cracks at bay. Apply a good thick foot cream twice a day. Apply your foot cream and wear socks at bedtime – you will wake up to super soft crack free feet.
DON’T FORGET THE SUNSCREEN :
It is a huge misconception that there is no need to apply sunscreen during winters since the sun isn’t that harsh. The damaging ultra violet rays of the sun are present in the atmosphere all year round so don’t forget to slather on your SPF before stepping out!
DRINK WATER :
We naturally tend to feel less thirsty during winters but we must make it a point to intentionally drink at least two to three liters of water daily to keep ourselves well hydrated. If the body isn’t hydrated from within you will never be able to get rid of dry skin no matter how good a moisturizer you use.
